Vampire Weekend album reviews

Contra [7/10]

'Contra' is the second studio offering from Vampire Weekend who come from New York. Just less than two years ago the bands self-titled debut album was released to critical acclaim peaking at number 15 in the UK album charts and spawning four hit singles in 'Mansard Roof', 'A-Punk', 'Oxford Comma' and 'Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa'. In October 2009 the band released the albums opening track 'Horchata' as a free digital download and a physical CD called 'Cousins' followed a month later. In December 2009 the band explained to The Times that Contra is "more intimate, vulnerable and conflicted" and "It contains their most bonkers moment, Californian English (think Lil Wayne does ska), and their softest, the contemplative break-up ballad I Think UR a Contra" Early reviews of the album are very positive with Spin magazine giving it 4 out of 5 saying 'Vampire Weekend aren't just good at being smart, they're smart at being good'
